Literacy Services - Small Group Classes
These classes serve to enrich the fundamental literacy lessons. The classes provide real-world situations that help students gain confidence in using their new English speaking and writing abilities. Classes generally last one to two hours.
A variety of classes are offered throughout the year depending on the current needs of students. Classes may include:
- Beginning English: This is a small group class for beginning level ESL students. They use workbooks to learn basic vocabulary and grammar.
- Intermediate and Advanced English Conversation: These classes give ESL students the opportunity to expand their vocabulary and practice their English speaking skills in a small group setting.
- Pre GED: The purpose of this class is to help adult learners review the basic skills needed to begin the GED process.
- In the News: Students learn about current events while participating in activities aimed at improving skills in conversation, reading and writing.
- Book Club: Students read and discuss a common book. Activities focus on increasing reading comprehension and conversation skills.
- ELL Civics: Funded by a grant from the WI Technical College System, this new series of classes helps students learn American civics and culture through topics such as Public Schools, Healthcare, Government and Finances. The classes include community field trips and guest speakers.
- Project Journey: This project is funded in part by a grant from the Wisconsin Humanities Council. Project Journey students and tutors work together to create connections among books, community experiences and their own lives.
